    Asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) an in-depth study

    Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is one member of a group of broadband access technologies that uses the existing copper-based local loop of the analog PSTN for high-speed digital data transmission. One feature of ADSL is that it permits analog voice POTS transmissions to continue uninterrupted over the same wiring. Specifically, POTS continues to use the 0 to 4 KHz frequency range of the copper wiring, while ADSL uses bandwidth starting at 25 KHz and extending up to approximately 1.1 MHz for data transmission. The term asymmetrical refers to the fact that data rates downstream (to the user) and upstream (from the user) are not the same. Typical ADSL data rates range from 1.536 to 6.144 Mbps downstream and from 16 to 640 Kbps upstream. Local loop length, wire size, and the presence of devices to improve voice communication such as bridged taps and loading coils all affect ADSL data rates. Digital data is coded by one of two methods: Discrete Multitone Modulation (DMT) or Carrierless Amplitude and Phase Modulation (CAP). Echo control is also accomplished by one of two methods: Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) or echo cancellation. This paper consists of four sections: 1) A technical review and comparison of the CAP and DMT line encoding technologies. 2) A market review of the presence of CAP and DMT technologies in customer premise equipment (CPE) such as modems and routers. 3) A review of the POTS physical layer that exists between the ADSL subscriber and the Telco CO, and its impact on ADSL availability and quality of service (QOS). 4) A technical review of the newer, splitterless, G.Lite technolog

    Teachers’ Understanding of School Finance and the Impact on Job Satisfaction

    To determine if a teacher’s understanding of school finance impacts their overall job satisfaction, this study used a mixed methods approach to investigate a Michigan metropolitan school district’s teacher’s understanding of school finance and their overall job satisfaction. The study utilized an initial survey to determine the level of job satisfaction of the staff. This was then followed by qualitative interviews that established the knowledge base of each respondent. Data collected showed that kindergarten through twelfth-grade teachers who express low job satisfaction also exhibited a poor grasp of school finance. Conversely, the staff who demonstrated high job satisfaction within the survey also showed a higher level of understanding of school finance.     Cosmological magnetic field survival

    It is widely believed that primordial magnetic fields are dramatically diluted by the expansion of the universe. As a result, cosmological magnetic fields with residual strengths of astrophysical relevance are generally sought by going outside standard cosmology, or by extending conventional electromagnetic theory. Nevertheless, the survival of strong B-fields of primordial origin is possible in spatially open Friedmann universes without changing conventional electromagnetism. The reason is the hyperbolic geometry of these spacetimes, which slows down the adiabatic magnetic decay-rate and leads to their superadiabatic amplification on large scales. So far, the effect has been found to operate on Friedmannian backgrounds containing either radiation or a slow-rolling scalar field. We show here that the superadiabatic amplification of large-scale magnetic fields, generated by quantum fluctuations during inflation, is essentially independent of the type of matter that fills the universe and appears to be a generic feature of open Friedmann spacetimes. We estimate the late-time strength of any residual field in a marginally open universe and show that it can easily meet the requirements for the dynamo generation of the magnetic fields observed in galaxies today.Comment: Equations streamlined, references updated.     Climate change and water in the UK: past changes and future prospects

    Climate change is expected to modify rainfall, temperature and catchment hydrological responses across the world, and adapting to these water-related changes is a pressing challenge. This paper reviews the impact of anthropogenic climate change on water in the UK and looks at projections of future change. The natural variability of the UK climate makes change hard to detect; only historical increases in air temperature can be attributed to anthropogenic climate forcing, but over the last 50 years more winter rainfall has been falling in intense events. Future changes in rainfall and evapotranspiration could lead to changed flow regimes and impacts on water quality, aquatic ecosystems and water availability. Summer flows may decrease on average, but floods may become larger and more frequent. River and lake water quality may decline as a result of higher water temperatures, lower river flows and increased algal blooms in summer, and because of higher flows in the winter. In communicating this important work, researchers should pay particular attention to explaining confidence and uncertainty clearly. Much of the relevant research is either global or highly localized: decision-makers would benefit from more studies that address water and climate change at a spatial and temporal scale appropriate for the decisions they mak

    The MyD88+ phenotype is an adverse prognostic factor in epithelial ovarian cancer

    The prognosis of epithelial ovarian cancer is poor in part due to the high frequency of chemoresistance. Recent evidence points to the Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4), and particularly its adaptor protein MyD88, as one potential mediator of this resistance. This study aims to provide further evidence that MyD88 positive cancer cells are clinically significant, stem-like and reproducibly detectable for the purposes of prognostic stratification. Expression of TLR4 and MyD88 was assessed immunohistochemically in 198 paraffin-embedded ovarian tissues and in an embryonal carcinoma model of cancer stemness. In parallel, expression of TLR4 and MyD88 mRNA and regulatory microRNAs (miR-21 and miR-146a) was assessed, as well as in a series of chemosensitive and resistant cancer cells lines. Functional analysis of the pathway was assessed in chemoresistant SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cells. TLR4 and MyD88 expression can be reproducibly assessed via immunohistochemistry using a semi-quantitative scoring system. TLR4 expression was present in all ovarian epithelium (normal and neoplastic), whereas MyD88 was restricted to neoplastic cells, independent of tumour grade and associated with reduced progression-free and overall survival, in an immunohistological specific subset of serous carcinomas, p<0.05. MiR-21 and miR-146a expression was significantly increased in MyD88 negative cancers (p<0.05), indicating their participation in regulation. Significant alterations in MyD88 mRNA expression were observed between chemosensitive and chemoresistant cells and tissue. Knockdown of TLR4 in SKOV-3 ovarian cells recovered chemosensitivity. Knockdown of MyD88 alone did not. MyD88 expression was down-regulated in differentiated embryonal carcinoma (NTera2) cells, supporting the MyD88+ cancer stem cell hypothesis. Our findings demonstrate that expression of MyD88 is associated with significantly reduced patient survival and altered microRNA levels and suggest an intact/functioning TLR4/MyD88 pathway is required for acquisition of the chemoresistant phenotype.     Rats, assorted shit and ‘racist groundwater’: towards extra-sectional understandings of childhoods and social-material processes

    Reflecting on a study of children’s outdoor play in a ‘white, working class estate’ in east London, this paper argues that social-material processes that are characteristically massy, indivisible, unseen, fluid and noxious have, problematically, remained hidden-in-plain-sight within multidisciplinary research with children and young people. For example, juxtaposing qualitative and autoethnographic data, we highlight children’s vivid, troubling narratives of swarming rats, smearing excrement, and percolating subsurface flows of water, toxins and racialised affects. In so doing, we develop a wider argument that key theorisations of matter, nature and nonhuman co-presences have often struggled to articulate the indivisibility of social-material processes from contemporary social-political-economic geographies. Over the course of the paper, as children’s raced, classed, exclusionary, disenfranchised narratives accumulate, we recognise the urgency of reconciling microgeographical accounts of play and materiality with readings of geographies of social-economic inequalities, exclusions, ethnicities, religions, memorialisations and mortalities. To this end, we initiate an argument for a move from intersectional to extra-sectional analyses that might retain intersectionality’s critical and political purchase, whilst simultaneously folding social-material complexities and vitalities into its theorisation
